The July/August edition of Legal IT contained a
feature urging law firms to join [the Identrus] data encryption standard. But what about law firms being urged to join an e-signature standard or, better still, to set the standard? Signing is a fundamental legal act. Without signatures, how much business or citizen activity could take place?

This article aims to promote a kick-start of action within the legal profession to explore fully the benefits of introducing digital certificates within the profession. Certificates can be used for either digital signature, data encryption, or both. There are certainly many business drivers for doing this, not least the desire to maintain a healthy and profitable legal industry.
