Broker Cazenove’s decision to turn itself after 177 years from a partnership into a company has once again cast the spotlight on its external legal adviser, Slaughter and May.

The reason for this is two-fold. First, it is easy to draw comparisons between the two institutions, not least because they advise the bulk of the UK’s largest blue-chip corporates. And there is also the uncanny resemblance in their cultures, both having been built on traditional, blue-blooded and conservative values where it takes years of back-breaking loyalty to make the step to partner.
