The suspension of Justice Joan Orie Melvin on Friday in the wake of criminal charges has left behind a state Supreme Court bench with limited effectiveness and few remedies, attorneys and legal watchers said.

Orie Melvin was immediately suspended by her fellow justices Friday after being charged in Allegheny County with nine criminal counts alleging she used legislative and judicial staff to perform campaign work.
