L&C Legal, the Hong Kong firm associated with Jingtian & Gongcheng that is expected to fully merge into the Chinese firm early this year, has hired its third capital markets partner since its launch five months ago.
Qizhen Dong focuses on initial public offerings, compliance matters for listed companies, pre-listing investments, and banking deals, particularly in the Chinese manufacturing and retail industries.
Dong was most recently in-house at Hong Kong-based Harvest Global Capital Investments Ltd., which he joined in September 2018. Before that, he was head of legal and company secretary at Hong Kong-based CMBC Capital Holdings Ltd. for a year and a half. Prior to his in-house stints, Dong was an associate at Pinsent Masons from 2015 to 2017 and practiced and trained at local firm Li & Partners from 2011 to 2015.
L&C Legal was launched by a team of six lawyers from Mayer Brown, led by partners Elaine Lo and Nicholas Chan, in September of last year and formed an association with Jingtian & Gongcheng. In the following two months, the firm recruited two former associates from Shearman & Sterling’s departing Hong Kong capital markets team, Stella Yeung and Stephen Luo, as partners. L&C Legal also promoted associate Alfred Li to partner last month.
Several other Chinese firms launched or expanded their presence in Hong Kong last year following the stock exchange’s listing rule changes. Commerce & Finance Law Offices, Anjie Law Firm, Tian Yuan Law Firm and DHH Law Firm all entered into associations with Hong Kong firms; Llinks Law Offices changed its Hong Kong associate firm; and Han Kun Law Offices expanded its three-year-old Hong Kong office with former Simpson Thacher & Bartlett capital markets lawyers.
