    IT teams under siege as personal tablet use booms at law firms

    Law firm IT directors are battling to support an influx of personal tablets and other mobile devices in the workplace, with almost a third of lawyers now using tablets in the office. The number of lawyers using devices such as iPads and Android tablets has grown by almost half in the last year, with around 34% uptake at law firms, compared to 23% in 2012, according to Legal Week Intelligence's annual IT Report. The survey, which canvassed the views of more than 2,000 lawyers at leading firms, found that although tablet use has increased significantly, the vast majority of these devices (94%) are personally owned, with law firms still restricting company devices to the senior echelons.

Every year, about one in four people in the UK will experience a mental health problem, with about 10% of the population suffering from depression and anxiety issues. Figures from Mind, a UK mental health charity, suggest that 8% of those suffering from mental health issues in any year will require specialist psychiatric help, while 2% will have problems so severe they require in-patient treatment.

Our survey examined several aspects of job satisfaction for third-, fourth- and fifth-year associates. They include compensation and benefits, training and guidance, interaction with partners and other associates, the interest and satisfaction level of the work, the firm's policy on billable hours and management's openness about firm strategies and partnership chances. Midlevels graded their workplaces on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest score. Below, firms with 10 or more responses are ranked by their averages on those questions. The response rate is the percentage of eligible midlevels at the firm who participated in the survey.
