Finnish firm makes five hires for Sweden launch
Finnish leader Hannes Snellman is launching in Stockholm, bringing in five high-profile Swedish partners from three different firms - Linklaters, Vinge and Setterwalls. Linklaters' Stockholm head of litigation and arbitration Martin Wallin, who announced that he was leaving to join Swedish independent Setterwalls only last month, is among the partners, along with three M&A and capital markets partners from Setterwalls - Soren Lindstrom, Richard Akerman and Jan Jensen.Double partner hire for K&L Gates
Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis has bolstered its US intellectual property and employment practices with the double partner hire of Eric Prager and Israel Kornstein respectively. Prager joins K&L Gates from intellectual property firm Darby & Darby, while Kornstein was at Akerman Senterfitt. Prager focuses on intellectual property counselling, licensing and litigation, with an emphasis on digital content issues. Solicitor General Paul Clement, who led the courtroom defense of the Bush administration's anti-terror legal policies, announced Wednesday he is leaving his job on 2 June. Clement argued 49 cases before the Supreme Court in the last seven years and was viewed as probably the most valued "catch" from the Bush Justice Department, with law firm managing partners guessing he could attract a $2m or $3m package. Sallie Mae has been in the headlines a lot lately. Maybe that's why it didn't bother announcing that its top lawyer resigned last week. General counsel Robert Lavet stepped down on 31 January after 16 years at the student loan consolidator formally known as SLM Corporation. Lavet's resignation came three days after Sallie Mae settled a suit against a buy-out group that abandoned a $25.3bn bid for the company.
