US Firms in London: Tough talking
US law firms remain publicly committed to expanding their London offices despite wider concerns that it could take until 2010 for current economic conditions to improve. This is the key finding of Legal Week's annual US law firms in London survey, which reveals that 86% plan to increase their headcount over the next 18 months. The revenue gap between the US's 100 largest firms and their second hundred counterparts widened in 2007 according to The American Lawyer's recently published Am Law 200 survey. Four new firms featured for the first time and one made a return to the rankings, which feature the 101st to the 200th largest firms in the US ranked by revenue.The results saw the average firm in the second hundred grow their turnover by 8.6%, from $157m (£80.2m) in 2006 to $170.5m (£87.1m) in 2007. Two reinsurance partners - including the head of the practice - are leaving Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft to join rival law firms, writes the New York Law Journal. Reinsurance chief Lawrence Brandes is set to join the New York office of transatlantic giant DLA Piper later this week, while another partner, Harry Cohen, will join the Manhattan branch of Crowell & Moring at the beginning of next month. Crowell & Moring has boosted its London arm with the hire of two senior disputes partners from national giant Eversheds. Gerallt Owen and Peter Kiernan join Crowell's City base as partners in the fraud and corporate crime practice. Managing partners nationwide expect a weak 2008 to bring fewer equity partner promotions, longer hours and higher rates, according to a new survey released Wednesday. Citi Private Bank's Managing Partner Confidence Index found that overall confidence fell nearly 20% in 2007, dropping by larger amounts each quarter.
