Shardul and Cyril Shroff, brothers and former co-managing partners of the now defunct Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co., seem to have learned very different lessons from the collapse of what had long been India’s number one law firm.
A disagreement about the distribution of firm equity held by their mother, Bharti, following her death last August resulted in six months of court-ordered mediation and, ultimately, led to the launch of two new firms earlier this month: Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas and Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas. The firms, which are approaching 400 and 600 lawyers, respectively, have been structured intentionally to avoid the mistakes they say led to the widely publicized dispute and forced the breakup of Amarchand.
