If you turned back the clock to 1998 and spoke to lawyers in the first few years of their careers, you would find that they were sceptical about spending time working overseas. As those who travelled were often treated as less qualified than their counterparts who had remained on the UK legal treadmill, concerns about promotion prospects after returning home dominated. In the past, many newly-qualified lawyers expected to develop their career over the course of many years with one or two firms, reaching partner and reaping the reward for loyalty and dedication. A stint abroad was often viewed as an indication that the lawyer in question was unable to 'cut it' on home ground and had been shunted overseas due to under-performance or, worse, scandal.
