A federal judge in Albany has given staff members at a Georgia immigration detention facility permission to force-feed a detainee awaiting deportation who has been on a hunger strike since April 20.

U.S. District Judge Leslie Abrams on May 12 signed the temporary restraining order allowing staff at the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia, forcibly to administer food and medications either intravenously or through a nasogastric tube to Vitaly Novikov, a Russian immigrant awaiting deportation, if a determination is made that his life is in immediate danger. The order also gave medical personnel permission to restrain Novikov if necessary to administer lifesaving nutrients.
