Longtime Jones Day M&A partner Sterling Spainhour Jr. has been tapped by Southern Co. as the new general counsel of Southern Company Services, which supports the utility’s operating company subsidiaries.

Spainhour has worked on several major Southern Co. transactions, including its $8 billion acquisition of AGL Resources, now Southern Company Gas, which closed July 1, making Southern Co. the second-largest utility in the nation.
