In 2012, CEO of Axiom Mark Harris asked whether the legal industry’s then-austerity measures were a function of the existing circumstances, or the mantra for a new era in corporate legal services. Fast-forward four years and consider the question answered. For GCs, escalating cost pressures were neither fad, nor trend. They are now a major job requirement, one made exceptionally harder by the long-standing rigidity of the traditional legal market.

Innovative GCs are, however, beginning to understand the value of unbundling legal work traditionally outsourced to law firms. While unbundling has proven an effective model, it’s still considered experimental in traditional legal circles. This article will explore the “why” behind unbundling and provide the critical “how”—how GCs can unbundle work to drive greater value from a more diverse network of outside providers.
