Former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes’ law firm has teamed up with an Atlanta litigation boutique to sue 15 Georgia telephone service providers for more than $50 million.

The Barnes Law Group and Harris Penn Lowry on Wednesday filed more than a dozen suits on behalf of Cobb and Gwinnett counties in U.S. District Court in Atlanta, and in Gwinnett and Fulton counties. They contend that telecommunications firms have underbilled many of their customers the monthly fees intended for the counties’ emergency 911 providers. The alleged underbilling translates to an estimated $9 million in annual losses for Cobb County and $8 million in annual losses for Gwinnett County, according to the complaints. Cobb is seeking three years of back reimbursements totaling more than $27 million; Gwinnett is seeking nearly $25 million.
