A Columbus jury reached an $8 million verdict last week in a case alleging sudden unintended acceleration of a Volkswagen Passat, but it reduced the award by 40 percent to account for the fault of the plaintiff.

The jury concluded that a design defect existed in the Honeywell turbocharger installed in the diesel-powered Passat and that the defect caused the crash that was the subject of the lawsuit. The jury awarded $7 million in damages to the plaintiff, Cheryl Bullock, who suffered internal injuries and fractures in her neck and legs that caused permanent disability. The jury added another $1 million to her husband, Kevin Bullock, for his loss of consortium claim.
