Real estate investors have paid a $2.9 million settlement to two women who were seriously injured when a deck on a rental house collapsed during a birthday barbecue, dropping 11 people about seven feet, according to the plaintiffs’ attorney.

Michael Neff of the Law Offices of Michael Neff said his clients—Shakaria Waters and Kimberly Simmons—were cooking for a gathering of family and friends at a Stone Mountain home when they were hurt in May 2014. They had just begun to sing “Happy Birthday” when the deck separated from the house.
