Former Georgia governor and Troutman Sanders founder Carl Sanders died on Sunday from complications after a fall at his home on Friday. He was 89.

As governor from 1963 to 1967, Sanders shepherded Georgia through the turbulent era of the civil rights movement—a make-or-break time for many Southern states—then founded the law firm that became Troutman Sanders, now an Am Law 100 firm with more than 600 lawyers in 15 offices and gross revenue last year of $394 million.
