A summary judgment victory allowed Regions Bank to avoid a trial in its home state on a charge of civil conspiracy to commit fraud by a joint venture partner in a failed Gulf Coast real estate development.

“While Regions was confident that its officers committed no wrongdoing, it appreciated the significant risk of a jury trial facing a conspiracy claim, particularly given the current stigma against banks,” said bank attorney William K. Whitner, an Atlanta-based partner with Paul Hastings. “I’m a trial lawyer, so I always want to try the case. But if you’re a bank right now, the last thing you want to see is a jury.”
