WILLIAM HERBERT has joined Smith, Gambrell & Russell as counsel to develop Japanese business after a long sojourn in Japan. He spent two years at Lexwell Partners, a Japanese law firm in Tokyo, and four years before that at Sankyo Co. in Tokyo, which he said is the second-largest pharmaceutical manufacturer in Japan.

Herbert, who grew up in Seattle, developed an interest in Japanese culture as a teenager and lived in Japan and taught English between college and law school. After receiving his law degree in Asian and comparative law from the University of Washington, he returned to Japan in 2000 to work for Sankyo, which he said had never hired a non-Japanese person before. The company hired him as part of a push to internationalize.
