Wednesday’s abrupt halt to jury selection in the Brian G. Nichols murder trial-on defense lawyers’ claims that they were inadequately funded-was met with frustration by lawmakers critical of how much the defense has already spent.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Preston W. Smith blasted Judge Hilton M. Fuller Jr., who ordered the public defender agency to show next week why it should not be held in contempt for not paying for Nichols’ lawyers and other resources, as a “rogue” jurist.
