COMPETITION FOR THE White House in 2008 is wide open and Georgia lawyers are opening up their checkbooks for all of the candidates, with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., the biggest beneficiaries of the state’s money overall.

The Daily Report looked at Georgia contributions for each of the parties’ top three frontrunners through June 30, as determined by cash on hand, in the data base of the Center for Responsible Politics, as well as an Internal Revenue Service disclosure for a group supporting Fred Thompson. While Georgia attorneys contributing to these frontrunners may also have contributed to other presidential candidates-or multiple frontrunners-a glance at the disclosures provides an interesting window into how the campaigns are shaping up.
