President Barack Obama’s nominee for the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had to answer some hostile questions about a recent sentencing decision but generally received a warm welcome from the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

Judge Beverly B. Martin, whom Obama wants to move up from the federal district court in Atlanta, was introduced to the panel by Georgia’s Republican senators, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson. Support from home-state senators, especially from the opposite party as the president, can often smooth a nominee’s confirmation process.
