You know the U.S. auto market is in big trouble when sales of the fuel-stingy Toyota Corolla plunge 27 percent, as they did in March.

For guzzlers like the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition it’s a lot worse-they’re down 34 percent apiece-and the American automakers won’t come up with small cars to replace these sport utility vehicles anytime soon.
