On the bench, she has a reputation as a calm, thoughtful and abundantly courteous jurist who treats those before her with respect and expects similar comportment in turn. So it takes a bit of imagination to picture Fulton County State Court Judge Brenda H. Cole ever assuming the role of campus protester.

But this year marks the 50th year since Cole counted herself lucky to have avoided arrest as one of hundreds of college students marching to demand an end to their second-class status in Jim Crow-era Atlanta.
