Cobb County state Court Judge Melodie H. Clayton was a clerk in the office of then-Cobb County District Attorney Thomas J. Charron in 1977, supporting assistant prosecutors. She liked the work and thought, “If these guys can be a lawyer, I can, too.”

She was right. So she could work during the day, Clayton attended night classes at Woodrow Wilson Law School in Atlanta, graduating in 1980.
