Legislation limiting who can order criminal defendants released on recognizance bonds could lead to inmate crowding at the Fulton County jail and cost the county more money to house inmates, according to Fulton court officials.

House Bill 889 was approved by the state House of Representatives and, on Monday, by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill would require that bonds releasing defendants on their own recognizance be issued only by elected judges-Superior Court and State Court judges.
