Morris Hardwick Schneider has agreed to pay about $162,000, plus interest, to settle a suit alleging that the firm botched the quitclaim deeds in two real estate closings and that one of its former lawyers, James W. Tarlton IV, made statements in an affidavit without knowing whether they were true or false.

The case revolves around a residential property that was sold, foreclosed on and sold again during the early years of Atlanta’s real estate crisis. The suit against the firm was filed in Fulton County Superior Court in 2007 and decided by a jury in December 2010. The firm appealed but settled this month.
