When federal prosecutors launched an investigation of the Atlanta Police Department’s narcotics squad following the shooting of 92-year-old Kathryn Johnston, U.S. Attorney David E. Nahmias enlisted one of his younger assistants — Jon-Peter F. Kelly — for a key role on the controversial, high-profile case.

Kelly, now 35, had been an Assistant U.S. Attorney for less than two years, but Nahmias says he picked him to serve as second chair with veteran prosecutor Yonette M. Buchanan “because we have a lot of faith in his ability and, particularly, his judgment.”
