The Georgia Court of Appeals on Sept. 22 announced that it is changing its official font from Times New Roman to Equity. This is the court’s first font change in 20 years, since it moved away from Courier.

The font change is internal and only applies to the court’s opinions, and the court’s rules for brief preparation remain unchanged. However, according to appellate lawyers and typography enthusiasts, a font change is about more than just aesthetics. The initiative, led by Presiding Judge Stephen Dillard, is one of several modernization efforts the court has undertaken in recent years.
