Iconic home furnishings brand Mitchell Gold Co., which announced over the weekend that it would wind down operations at its Taylorsville, North Carolina, factory, was hit with an employment class action on Aug. 28 in North Carolina Western District Court under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. The suit seeks 60 days’ worth of wages and benefits on behalf of about 500 workers who were allegedly terminated without advance notice. The suit was brought by Higgins Benjamin PLLC; Lankenau & Miller; and the Gardner Firm. Counsel have not yet appeared for private equity owned Mitchell Gold.

With stores operating under the name Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, the company has 25 other locations in North America, including a signature store in Atlanta, outlets in Asheville and Hickory, North Carolina; and virtual stores in Alpharetta, Georgia; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Charleston, South Carolina. It is unclear if the Taylorsville factory’s shuttering will lead to store closures, and though the company does have another factory in Hiddenite, North Carolina, a media report stated the employees who worked at that factory were also told not to report to work on Monday. An email sent to the company with questions about possible store closures was not immediately returned. The case is 5:23-cv-00135, Price v. The Mitchell Gold Co., LLC.
