A jury has awarded $10.1 million to a couple in a Georgia medical-malpractice case after a woman’s common bile duct was accidentally cut during a surgical procedure, causing complications that required multiple follow-up surgeries and pain that her lawyers say will last the rest of her life.

On June 13, the jury in Cobb County State Court Judge John Morgan’s courtroom ruled in favor of Amy and Allen McGouirk, who sued Dr. Tamica E. White and Wellstar Medical Group for negligence and failing to meet the standard of care while performing a cholecystectomy on Amy McGouirk on Oct. 18, 2018, at Wellstar Spalding Regional Hospital in Griffin.
