It may be difficult to overstate a prosecutor’s power in a trial, but the Georgia Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that one did, and overturned a murder conviction because of it.

In a unanimous opinion written by Justice Carla Wong McMillian, the court reversed the conviction of Willie Caldwell, accused of shooting Ricardo McPherson to steal a stash of marijuana in 2008. Caldwell was convicted in 2018 and sentenced to life in prison.
