On Monday—day two of jury deliberations in Charlottesville, Virginia—Roberta Kaplan gathered the lawyers from her firm Kaplan, Hecker & Fink. With Thanksgiving coming up, no idea of when a verdict would land and the legal team having already been in the small city for over a month working on the civil trial, Kaplan said she would understand if any of them left.

None of them did, “at least based on the welcome when we came back today,” Kaplan said in an interview Tuesday.
