The swiftness of the George Floyd civil settlement and the criminal conviction of the Minneapolis police officer for murdering Floyd highlights Atlanta’s lack of political leadership and progress toward achieving justice and reform in policing. While Atlanta was once at the forefront of the “Civil Rights Movement” the same cannot be said for Atlanta’s role in the current “Black Lives Matter” movement.

As a civil rights lawyer, I represent victims of police violence in Atlanta, including those who are beaten, tasered, pepper-sprayed and killed by the police without legal justification. But even more disturbing than the prevalence of police violence in Atlanta is the lack of accountability and responsibility of city officials to a long and growing list of innocent victims injured and killed by Atlanta’s police officers.
