Tucked into a ruling affirming a murder conviction Thursday was an announcement that the Georgia Supreme Court will no longer act on its own to make sure the evidence in noncapital murder cases passes constitutional muster. 

The announcement came in the court’s opinion upholding Brian Davenport’s conviction in Catoosa County for the 2016 murder of Debora Lynn Abney.
