A former Georgia Supreme Court justice who oversaw efforts to identify possible improvements in the state appellate courts says “everyone ought to think long and hard” before expanding the state’s highest court.

Former Justice Hardy Gregory’s comments in an interview on Wednesday followed reports earlier this week that Gov. Nathan Deal wants to add two justices to the court. That would bring the court to the maximum size of nine allowed under the state constitution—and potentially give Deal the chance to have appointed the majority of its justices.
