Lex Machina’s second annual Patent Litigation Year in Review reveals that the number of federal patent cases filed last year fell by 21 percent—from 6,082 cases in 2013 to 5,012 cases.

But 2013 was a peak year, according to Lex Machina’s data, and 2014 was still the third-busiest year for new filings since Lex Machina began tracking filings in 2007. The second busiest year was 2012, when 5,435 cases were filed. (In 2007, there were 2,758 cases filed.)
