On March 11, 2005, accused rapist Brian Nichols overpowered a deputy and escaped from the Fulton County Courthouse. Nichols’ shooting spree killed Superior Court Judge Rowland Barnes, court reporter Julie Brandau and Deputy Sgt. Hoyt Teasley. His beating of Deputy Cynthia Hall left her brain-damaged. Hours later, Nichols murdered U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent David Wilhelm in Buckhead. Nichols surrendered in Gwinnett County the next day.

The Fulton County Courthouse will observe a moment of silence at 9 a.m. on March 11 in remembrance of those slain that day 10 years earlier. Fulton County Chief Judge Gail Tusan released the following statement on behalf of the Atlanta Judicial Circuit:
