Holland & Knight is honoring the 100th anniversary of the birth of founding partner Chesterfield Smith with a $100,000 gift to Legal Services of Greater Miami Inc.
Smith, who was born July 28, 1917 and died in 2003, was a vocal advocate for pro bono legal services for the poor. The firm commits at least 3 percent of its billable hours to pro bono legal services each year.
Legal Services is a nonprofit that provides free civil legal services in the areas of tenants’ rights, home ownership, health, income maintenance, employment, special education, tax and consumer rights.
In 1999, Legal Services named its office building the Chesterfield Smith Center for Equal Justice, in honor of Smith’s role as chairman of the Legal Services Campaign for Justice, which raised money to buy the building. Several Holland & Knight partners are involved in the organization either on the board of directors or its committees. Several also provide services to the organization.
In May, Legal Services of Greater Miami awarded Holland & Knight partner and former South Florida U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer its 2017 Equal Justice Leadership Award.
