A Miami lawyer helped obtain a $145 million whistleblower settlement from Life Care Centers of America Inc. and its owner — the largest settlement with a skilled nursing facility chain in U.S. Department of Justice history.

The settlement was reached Monday after eight years of litigation brought by two former Life Care employees. The case included more than 30 depositions and a four-year government investigation.
