In June 2011, the Southern District of Florida was selected as one of 14 U.S. District Courts to participate in a patent pilot program. The program was designed to enhance a court’s expertise in complex patent litigation. However, the program’s effects on case management and effective judicial administration were not entirely foreseen.

The mechanics of the patent pilot program are relatively simple: when a new patent case is filed in a participating district court, after an initial random assignment the case may be reassigned to one of several judges elected to participate in the program.
