It should have been a simple spinal procedure, but a microbial infection during surgery left a Palm Beach County man with a lifetime of pain, and Jupiter Medical Center Inc. faces a $1.4 million judgment.

In October 2011, Timothy Holland went to the hospital for a scheduled spinal operation to relieve chronic back and leg pain. The procedure seemed successful, but in the weeks that followed he experienced increasing pain. A surgical lumbar stain diagnosed Holland with a myobacterium fortuitum infection.
