Robert and Paulette Kirkpatrick, both 63, were retired teachers from suburban Baltimore, enjoying a road-trip vacation across Florida.
The couple was headed east from an art show in Naples where Robert was showing his paintings. Traveling the Tamiani Trail in Miami-Dade County, their rental sedan was struck by a drunken driver in a Toyota truck.
