The Palm Beach County Criminal Justice Commission was established in 1988 by a county ordinance through the efforts of the Palm Beach County Economic Council to be an advisory board to the Palm Beach County Commission on matters relating to criminal justice. It is a unique forum of 33 members that brings together 21 public sector members representing local, state, and federal criminal justice and governmental agencies, and 12 private sector business leaders representing the Economic Council of Palm Beach County. Included are constitutional officers including the chief judge, state attorney, public defender, clerk and comptroller, sheriff, chair or commission member of the Palm Beach County Commission, and the juvenile division administrative judge, whose policy making responsibilities and input are critical to the success of the CJC in carrying out its mission to serve as a catalyst to bring together criminal justice and related agencies in partnerships. Also included, e.g., are the resident agent in charge of the FBI, the U.S. attorney or assistant in West Palm Beach and the resident agent in charge of ATF.

The viability of the CJC was seriously threatened when during 2011 the then State Attorney Michael McAuliffe, opined that because the members of the CJC, even as an advisory body, were subject to F.S.286.011 (the Sunshine Law), the members including the constitutional officers could not outside of formally noticed public meetings discuss any matters that might come before the CJC.
