When Chris Mitchell injured himself nearly 25 years ago on a commercial fishing boat, he set in motion an unusual bankruptcy that resulted in the arrest of the boat’s captain last year.

Mitchell won a $114,000 award in Washington state court against owner James E. Gowdy’s company, Ocean Warrior, which was incorporated in Florida. Mitchell was able to get an order for the 75-foot Janice to be sold in 1990, but Ocean Warrior filed for bankruptcy protection in Miami.
