A jury awarded nearly $9.4 million to a man who sustained numerous orthopedic and nerve injuries when his motorcycle collided with a car.

Leslie Opper, then 41, was near the intersection of U.S.1 and 17th Street in Vero Beach when he was struck nearly head-on by a turning sedan driven by William Exton. Opper was knocked off his bike and flew into Exton’s windshield. Exton, then 91, stated at the scene that he normally didn’t drive at night. Opper suffered at least 10 fractures and underwent more than 10 surgeries, including the implantation of multiple pieces of hardware.
