The Palm Beach County School Board agreed to pay $200,000 to the estate of a motorcyclist who was paralyzed in a collision with a bus.

Graham Herbert, 25, was riding his motorcycle on Haverhill Road in West Palm Beach when, according to plaintiffs counsel, a Palm Beach school bus pulled in front of him abruptly. Herbert struck the side of the bus. He sustained spinal cord injuries that left him paralyzed from the neck down. He underwent several surgeries, including bone grafting. He was placed on a ventilator for almost a year until he died. Because of sovereign immunity limits, any damage award in excess of $200,000 would have required a claims bill and the approval by the Legislature.
