Following a six-month delay over a protest by a losing bidder, the Broward County Commission awarded the construction contract Tuesday for a new courthouse to James A. Cummings Inc. of Fort Lauderdale.

The $179 million price tag covers demolition of the existing central and west wings of the old courthouse in downtown Fort Lauderdale, construction of a 700,000-square-foot, 20-story tower and a landscaped plaza.
