The new America Invents Act changes the way everyone — from large corporations to the average Joe with a good idea — does business. Now, the profits will go to the first to file for a patent, not the first to invent.

All other countries already grant patent applications based on who filed first. It will take a while for American inventors and corporations to become comfortable with the new system that determines who finishes ahead.
