In South Florida, the recent conviction of Marika Tolz, a Hollywood-based real estate broker and often-appointed bankruptcy trustee and receiver — following on the heels of the 2010 conviction of Miami accountant and attorney Lewis Freeman, a well-known trustee and receiver — ignited great controversy and understandable consternation from the Bench, the Bar and those individuals who have devoted their careers to acting as fiduciaries to our local judiciary.

Last month Tolz pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy involving five Broward County investment properties; sentencing is set for July 27. Freeman is serving a 10-year sentence for taking $2.6 million from accounts under his control.
