Lawyers jockeying over where to consolidate federal litigation against hip-replacement device maker DePuy Orthopaedics seem to agree on one thing: U.S. District Judge Susan Wigenton in Newark, New Jersey, shouldn’t handle it.

The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation is preparing to consolidate 14 federal suits filed in California, Illinois, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina and Texas over DePuy hip implants recalled Aug. 27. About 4,500 people are believed to have experienced premature failure of the devices. A decision is expected Nov. 18.
